Woman Makes Living From Horse Art
Is it even possible to get a horse to pose? The only person in the world who can do the impossible is a lady photographer from Pasadena, California, whose photos are hung in the homes of famous people. She has grown from the girl who borrowed a camera from Pasadena City College (PCC) to the woman who follows tracks and shows and boasts pictures of the Olympics in Montreal and British Princess Anne.
Horses were the easiest to shoot for practice when she attended photography class at PCC after graduating from Pasadena High School. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were like a second home to her since she was 10 years old. Her assignments consisted of photographing horses at the local stables with her borrowed camera. Even though she was also studying music, art and journalism, a sale of one of her pictures to a proud horse owner sent her hobby galloping towards a career. Her first job was as an assistant to two famous equestrian photographers, for which she helped focus and pose horses at shows, tracks, and state fairs throughout the country. When that gig ended, she found another photographer pair to be apprenticed to, who focused on California shows. Her Swedish camera with German lens is her tools nowadays, and her mother handles business.
Six-foot jumps and winning a race by the nose are her trademark shots. But her formal photos, of horses bent down on all fours, are also a source of pride. Photogenic horses like to show off. Just turn toward some horses with a camera and they immediately perk their ears or raise their heads. Other horses are as unhelpful as can be.
She said taking a good horse photo is not as easy as it seems. The best shots of hunters and jumpers, on the one hand, are those of them mid-air with legs bent at just the right angle. With their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs, Tennessee walkers look best. A stock horse should be caught stopping in a slide, and a saddle horse should be caught with legs and head held high. The Peruvian Paso, an endangered species from South America that groups are trying so hard to save, is the subject of some of her best photos. As their forelegs roll toward the outside, take their picture. They are a photographer’s delight, combined with their riders’ traditional white ponchos with elaborate bridles and saddles. She has met many a celebrity horse enthusiast through her work. Her camera work had her talking with royalty. At the Montreal Olympics she was able to photograph Princess Anne, which brought her to the side of the Queen. The Queen said she always feels nervous every time her daughter would attempt a high jump. She began to photograph fork lifts for a little variation, even though she fills her spare time with swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
Perked ears are no requisite for fork lifts.
