Tips For Wearing Your Nightgown Out On The Town
Everyone’s seen those people. You know the ones — they’re wearing their flannel pajama pants at the store, at school and everywhere else except their own homes. This is a huge fashion no, but smart, savvy fashionistas know it’s possible to rock nighttime clothes during the day or out on the town. Dump those flannel pants and pull out a sexy nightgown. With the right accessories, no one will know you’re wearing your nightclothes during the day.
Tip #1: Know Which Nightgowns Work As Dresses
Your favorite sleep shirt from when you were younger? Um, no. If you want to wear a nightgown as daytime wear, look for one that’s pretty and feminine, but not simply a boxy T-shirt.
For a romantic look, consider a Victorian-inspired nightgown. For a fun, fresh, off the wall look, choose one with a funky print. Just avoid too-short chemises or sexy babydolls. Wearing one of these outside the house can send off the wrong vibe, whether you’re in the office or out on the town. While it’s fun to wear your nightgown out during the daytime, you don’t want other people to think you simply forgot to get dressed in the morning!
Tip #2: Wear A Slip
Slips aren’t just for grannies – they’re a must have accessory if you’re wearing a nightgown that’s on the sheer side. Sheer nighties are sexy in the bedroom, but a total fashion don’t if worn on their own during the day. Look for a slip that’s shorter than your nightgown and find one that’s as close to your skin tone as possible if you’re wearing a pastel gown. If your nightie is dark, choose a slip in a similar shade.
Tip #3: Watch The Length
A too-long nightgown can look frumpy and a too-short version can look a little too sexy. Instead, choose one that hits you just above the knees. Consider hemming or even just cutting the nightgown if the hemline is a little too long — sometimes a frayed hem can look fresh and funky. If you just need to shorten the length by an inch or two, add a belt to up the hemline. A thin leather belt can help keep your look classy, while a thick, bold belt can help add some structure. Although scarves are popular replacements for belts, avoid pairing them with your nightgown. The flowy fabric of the scarf and the nightgown is a bad combination.
Tip #4: Shoes Make All The Difference
If your nightshirt is on the sweeter side with a little romantic lace, pair it with a pair of strappy, flat or low heeled sandals. If you’re looking for a sporty look, use a pair of low booties. Just avoid super high stilettos, or boots higher than knee length with your nightgown. These shoes can come off as too sexy, especially when paired with a nightgown.
Tip #5: How To Accessorize
Accessories can take a nightgown from night to day. If you’re trying to wear your nightgown to the office, a blazer is a must. This helps provide a little structure and if you choose the right nightgown, no one will know that it doubles as nighttime wear. A chunky necklace, a pair of hoop earrings and a dark pair of tights complete the look.
If you’re taking the look from the office to a night on the town, remove the blazer or swap it out for a small, fitted cardigan. Choose jewelry that’s on the dainty side and line your arms with some gold bangles. Avoid too many accessories and follow CoCo Chanel’s advice to always remove one accessory before you head out the door. Too many accessories can make you look fussy and overdone.
